PEDALS AND PRINTS CLOSES BUT THE BICYCLISTS WILL CONTINUE ON

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

(I have the “My Other Gun is a Bike” serigraph hanging in this show.) For those of you who missed the opening…

In a continuing effort to promote the “bicycle as a as a viable, healthy, and sustainable transportation choice” and to expose the growing bicyclist movement growing in Downtown Los Angeles, Crewest Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles, is calling upon all Angelenos, Bicyclists and Art Enthusiasts to join them this Saturday, April 24th, 2010 from 7pm to 9pm for the closing of Pedals and Prints.

Pedals and Prints is an exhibition featuring hand printed bicycle themed art by artists who all share an undying enthusiasm for the bicycling community.

In addition to the closing event, Two Rabbits Studios, the curators of Pedals and Prints, will be releasing their new t-shirts “Penny Party” and “Dumpster Diver” both made by J. Knice Clothing Company and from 100% RECYCLED PLASTIC.

About the T-shirts:
The fabric content is made from 100% RECYCLED PLASTIC!!!!!!!!….WHY? The use of recycled polyester for clothing and other products lessens our need for oil, reduces waste (and the toxins required to burn it), and produces less pollution than when starting off with virgin polyester.

Penny Party – Penny-farthing, high wheel, high wheeler, and ordinary are all terms used to describe a type of bicycle with a large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel that was popular after the boneshaker, until the development of the safety bicycle, in the 1880s. They were the first machines to be called ‘bicycles’. Although they are now most commonly known as ‘penny-farthings’, this term was probably not used until they were nearly outdated; the first recorded print reference is 1891 in Bicycling News. It comes from the British penny and farthing coins, one much larger than the other, so that the side view resembles a penny leading a farthing.

Dumpster Diver – Contains an image of a gross looking dude with flies all around him. The shirt is a heather charcoal and will be printed with a water base discharge.

Also for those interested in taking part of “The Freedom Ride” aka The Bikes and Art Ride, the ride will start at the Conart/Legends Graffiti Art and Barbershop 431 N. Fairfax 90048 next door to Canters and end at Crewest Gallery (110 Winston St. Los Angeles, CA 90013) in Downtown LA. to peep the”Pedals and Prints” Art Show. Ride begins at 1pm (meet at noon) and is approximately 22 miles long. See ya Sunday.

Crewest is located at 110 Winston St., Los Angeles, CA 90013 (213-627-8272)

New PAPER POLITICS Book – Featuring Paul Barron

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Paper Politics by Josh Macphee Featuring Paul Barron.

I have a three color relief print featured in this book that PM Press released.

Available at… MediaDissent.com

Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today is a major collection of contemporary politically and socially engaged printmaking. This full color book showcases print art that uses themes of social justice and global equity to engage community members in political conversation. Based on an art exhibition which has traveled to a dozen cities in North America, Paper Politics features artwork by over 200 international artists; an eclectic collection of work by both activist and non-activist printmakers who have felt the need to respond to the monumental trends and events of our times.

Paper Politics presents a breathtaking tour of the many modalities of printing by hand: relief, intaglio, lithography, serigraph, collagraph, monotype, and photography. In addition to these techniques, included are more traditional media used to convey political thought, finely crafted stencils and silk-screens intended for wheat pasting in the street. Artists range from the well established (Sue Coe, Swoon, Carlos Cortez) to the up-and-coming (Favianna Rodriguez, Chris Stain, Nicole Schulman), from street artists (BORF, You Are Beautiful) to rock poster makers (EMEK, Bughouse).

Praise:

“Let’s face it, most collections of activist art suck. Either esthetic concerns are front and center and the politics that motivate such creation are pushed to the margin, or politics prevail and artistic quality is an afterthought. With the heart of an activist and the eye of an artist, Josh MacPhee miraculously manages to do justice to both. Paper Politics is singularly impressive.” –Stephen Duncombe, author of Dream: Re-Imagining Progressive Politics in an Age of Fantasy

“For all of those who claim that poster art is dead in the age of YouTube and Blogs, Paper Politics will wheatpaste another message over your computer monitor. This exhibition and book is a testament to the vibrant trajectory of printmaking in the service of social change, including examples of earlier movements and artists as well as the graphics popping up right now. Obscure and familiar subjects are presented with wit, joy, and searing satire, guaranteed to snap your senses and challenge your opinions. It took a village to make this show, and the world will benefit from seeing it.” –Lincoln Cushing, author of Revolucion! Cuban Poster Art

About the Editor:

Josh MacPhee is a Brooklyn-based artist, curator, designer and activist currently living in Brooklyn, NY. His work often revolves around themes of radical politics, privatization and public space. He regularly produces posters and graphics for political groups and events, as well as to sell on Justseeds.org, a political art collective he helped found. He organizes the Celebrate People’s History Poster Series and is often in front of his computer designing books for PM Press.
